Sometimes One Wave Is All It Takes

One Wave

OneWave is a non-profit surf community tackling mental health issues with a simple recipe: salt-water, surfing, good mates and Fluro Friday’s.

What’s Fluro Friday? This a morning when a supportive community connected by the ocean come together (wearing fluro) to provide a place where people feel safe talking about mental health issues. This combined with getting in the ocean and catching a wave, can give people hope – it is this hope that OneWave believes can change someone’s life.

One Wave 2

In July OneWave ran a great crowdfunding campaign on StartSomeGood, raising $55,000 to expand Fluro Friday to 20 regular beaches and helping 10,000 experiencing mental health issues.

Before the crowdfunding campaign there were 7 beaches doing regular Fluro Fridays. Now there are 17 beaches in three countries doing regular Fluro Friday’s.

The 17 locations are:

  • South Bondi, Sydney
  • Manly, Sydney
  • North Wollongong
  • North Avoca
  • Norah Heads
  • Merewether, Newcastle
  • Port Macquarie
  • Lennox Heads
  • Byron Bay
  • Burleigh Heads
  • Alex Heads
  • Scarborough Beach/Mettams Beach, WA
  • Mount Maunganui, NZ
  • Takapuna, NZ
  • Dunedin, NZ
  • Venice Beach, Los Angeles
  • Cardiff Beach, San Diego

Here’s a collection of photos from the first North Wollongong gathering:

Looks like fun right? If you’re near any of these beaches get down and be part of Fluro Friday. If you’re not consider starting your own Fluro Friday at a new location. Click here to express interest.
